A small wind bell of cast-iron hangs neｘt to a reed screen,together they evoke summertime
in Japan. To catch the breeze,a feather of a small rectangular piece of paper is attached to the clapper. Wind bells are said to have been originally imported from china.
Terakoya was a place where the children of common people received education in reading ,writing and calculation including the study of abacus which supported domestic commerce and one of the world's first mass publication especially in Edo.
The great respect for education is the characteristics of Edo period well days before its rapid modernization.
